The credit math that decides it
Amex Gold's $325 fee sounds steep. But the $120 Uber Cash and $120 dining credits (Grubhub, Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, Five Guys, Shake Shack) together are worth $240 if you use them. Add the $84 Dunkin credit and you're at $324 in credits offsetting the fee.
The catch: these are monthly credits ($10 Uber, $10 dining, $7 Dunkin) that expire if unused. If your life doesn't naturally include Uber and Dunkin, the credits become chores. If it does, the fee is effectively zero.
CSP has no such credits. The $95 fee is real, but there's nothing to babysit. Cleaner if you don't want the mental overhead.

Points value tips the scale further
Both cards earn transferable points. Chase Ultimate Rewards has fewer transfer partners but stronger ones (Hyatt is the star of the show at 3 to 4¢/point value). Amex Membership Rewards has more partners across airlines (30+) but no hotel partner as strong as Hyatt.
If you have a specific redemption goal (say, aspirational hotel stays), Chase points are usually easier to convert into outsized value. If your redemption is airline miles, especially international business class, Amex has more options.
How to pick, in one line each
- You'll use $10/mo Uber and $10/mo dining without thinking about it: Amex Gold.
- You don't want monthly credit chores and you like Hyatt: CSP.
- You shop groceries at Costco or Walmart: CSP (Gold's 4x won't trigger there).
- You spend $15k+ on dining alone: Amex Gold, the 4x compounds.
- You want your first travel card and don't know yet: CSP, safer starting point.
